Final Stats
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Freshman Hannah Deutsch competed in her first collegiate all-around and won the event, leading the Illinois State gymnastics team to a season sweep against Alaska-Anchorage on Sunday, Feb. 17. The meet was held at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage, Alaska. The Redbirds improve to 6-1 on the season, while Anchorage drops to 3-7.
The all-around event was a first-time experience for two Redbird gymnasts, with freshman Robin Weissman and Deutsch competing in their first collegiate all-arounds. Deutsch won the event with a 38.300, while freshman Erica Schick placed second with a score of 38.250. Weissman came in third with a mark of 38.075.
The Redbirds won every event in the meet. ISU also defeated the Seawolves by a score of 189.450-186.425 Friday.
Head coach Bob Conkling was proud of this team and the discipline they showed.
"It has been difficult for the gymnasts in Alaska," said Conkling. The traveling was tough on the team and the change in the weather was also hard. However, I am proud of the way they performed. They needed to pull their routines together, and they did just that. They did what they needed to do to win, and did a good job of that."
On the vault, the Seawolves' Jessica Portlock won the event with a 9.600, while her teammate, Kelsey Fullerton, took second with a tally of 9.575. Freshman Emily Matko, Deutsch and Schick tied for third in the event with a score of 9.550. The Redbirds won the event, 47.650-47.500.
The `Birds won the uneven bars with a score of 47.875. Junior Mary Hankosky returned to the Redbird lineup after battling a wrist injury. The New Lenox, Ill., native won the event with a score of 9.800, a career-best. Senior co-captain Amanda Candler's score of 9.725 put her into second place in the event.
Deutsch won the balance beam with a mark of 9.825, while sophomore Lisa Mulchek took second in the event with a score of 9.675, a season-best mark. The Redbirds scored a 47.600 to win the event.
On the floor routine, the Redbirds won the event, 48.025-47.450. Deutsch tied for first in the event with a score of 9.750. In second place, Matko scored a 9.675. Rounding out the top-three was Schick, with a score of 9.650.
The Redbirds have two weeks off before returning to action on Sunday March, 2. The `Birds will host Southeast Missouri State and Wisconsin-Whitewater in Horton Field House. The first event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
