BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
After three days of competition, Illinois State freshman Skip Span finished fourth overall in the Crimson Singles Flight at the Indiana Hoosier Classic Sunday. Junior Xavier Riart-Ferrer did not resume play due to injury.
Span went head-to-head against Richard Canelas (Xavier) in a consolation match, to be defeated in the third set super tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-7(4-7), 12-10. Span grabbed an overall fourth place in the Crimson Flight.
"Skip played well and fought hard, he just came out on the short end," said head coach Cris James. "This was a pretty successful first collegiate match for him. He showed a lot of heart; he was battling the flu all weekend. I think he learned a lot about himself and his game."
James thinks that it was a fairly successful weekend in singles. He is confident that the `Birds will continue to improve throughout the season.
"Hopefully Xavier's knee is nothing serious and he will be able to battle back from his injury," said James.
The `Birds season will continue next weekend as they travel to Peoria, Ill. for the Bradley Invitational, Sept.19-21.
