Redbird newcomers Micah LeMoine and Timon Reichelt earned their first win as a doubles pair as Illinois State went 1-2 in doubles competition at the Country Inn & Suites Invitational Friday.
LeMoine, a freshman from Urbana, Ill., and Reichelt, a sophomore from Wedemark, Germany, defeated Paul Swanson and Michael Wesley (Wisconsin -Green Bay), 8-4, in the first round of doubles Flight 3.
The Redbirds competed with three players Friday and alternated teams after every match. Reichelt teamed up with junior Michael Hobson in the second round and were defeated by St. Louis University's Ken Nordheim and Adam Reeb in a close match, 9-8.
Illinois State received a bye in the third round of competition and switched teams again in the fourth. LeMoine and Hobson were outlasted by Illinois Chicago's Bastian Harbo and Tim O'Brien, 8-5.
Despite the young Redbirds initial success, head coach Cris James felt the team's under-performed.
"We need to bring more intensity, be aggressive, play with confidence, and expect better of ourselves," said James. "We didn't come out ready to play. There wasn't enough intensity. Our guys need to understand that expectations are high, sleep on it and come out tomorrow and make up for today."
Competition continues Saturday with the final round of doubles play and opening of singles action.
