Wins by Illinois State's Timon Reichelt and Filip Miljevic helped the Redbirds kick off the fall season at the Louisville Invitational Friday. The team posted a 13-4 overall record on the day and head coach Cris James was excited to see the players get off to a positive start.
"Overall I think the team played very well today," James said. "The guys have a lot of confidence already and our expectation levels are high for this weekend."
Reichelt defeated Vincennes' Lendl Smith, 6-2, 6-3, and Lander's Henrik Willers, 6-4, 6-4, in Flight A singles, while Miljevic defeated Tennessee Tech's Nick Stafford, 6-4, 6-0, and Morehead State's Nathan Martin, 6-2, 6-0 in Flight B singles. Newcomer Alex Pelaez lost to Western Kentucky's Tomi Krug in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6(7-3), in Flight A singles.
"The team played some tough matches and Alex was a little tight and nervous," James said. "He had some tough competition and I think he put some pressure on himself to do well. I hope he can play with more freedom tomorrow."
Senior Xavier Riart-Ferrer defeated Western Kentucky's Lance Freeman, 6-1, 6-1, and Lander's Christopher Mattsson, 6-0, 6-1 in Flight B singles.
"Xavier improved a lot this summer," James said. "He is coming into this tournament and expecting to go far. I think it is good to see that level of confidence from him."
In doubles, the Redbirds had three teams advance including Skip Span and transfer Matej Zlatkovic who defeated Lander's Willers and Mattsson, 8-6. Pelaez and Miljevic teamed up to defeat Morehead State's Greg Anderson and Bradley Bryan, 8-6, while Riart-Ferrer and Micah LeMoine defeated Indiana Southeast's Matt Coomer and Adam Denney, 9-7.
"In doubles, I was trying to pair up guys who clicked together and their skills matched up," James said. "If we can clean up our mistakes, I think we will do well on the doubles court. I'm excited to see how we do tomorrow since the competition will be getting tougher."
