Final Stats

EL PASO, Texas - Sophomore Aniko Kiss contributed two wins to help the Illinois State women's tennis team take its third consecutive victory this season. The Redbirds faced the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and clinched the last point with a tiebreaker in the No. 1 singles position.

Kiss played at the No. 1 singles position where she competed against Mirna Cicak of Texas AM-Corpus Christi. The match went to three sets when Kiss clinched a win in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, 6-3. The weather was hot and humid but head coach Chris Hoover was excited for the team to play outside.

"It went right down to the last match with No. 1 singles," said Hoover. "The match went to a third set that we won 6-3. It was a good match and I was pretty pleased before the end because I thought we had a good fight against a solid team. It's very nice to come here and play schools that train outdoors everyday. We got to hit for 60 minutes before the match and that was it. It was fun and I like to beat the sun schools."

ISU's Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt gained the first Redbird point of the day against Mirna Cicak and Megan Harless, 8-5, at the No. 1 doubles position. Kiss played at the No. 2 doubles position with partner, Natalia Lech. The Redbird duo battled against Bianca Discordia and LeAnne Mascall where they dropped their first set but came back to steal the win, 8-4.

"We were in there battling and we had to come back to win the doubles point," Said Hoover. "Aniko dropped the first set but ultimately clinched the point. All in all it was a great day. It was a barn burner but we won 4-3."

The women's tennis team will continue play on Saturday, Feb. 6, starting at 9 a.m. The Redbirds take on the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), in the El Paso Tennis Club.
