NORMAL, Ill. -
The Illinois State women's golf team once again travels to a warmer climate, this time to compete in the 2010 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic Feb. 21-23 on Kiawah Island, S.C. The event will take place on two courses - the par-72, 6,007-yard Cougar Point and the par-72, 5,957-yard Oak Point.
The three day event will consist of 18-holes of play each day, the first and second rounds beginning with set tee times between 9-11:15 a.m., and the final round with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. The top 20 teams after the first two rounds will play the final round at Cougar Point, while teams 21-35 will play the final round at Oak Point.
Senior Britt Knutson will travel with the `Birds after earning her first MVC Golfer of the Week at the Hurricane Invitational Feb. 14-16. Joining Knutson will be senior teammates Stacey Miller, Marisa Milligan, Laura Harris and Christine Larson. With a line-up of all veterans, head coach Darby Sligh hopes their experience will help earn the team a title.
"This event is huge for us in so many ways," said Sligh. "Most notably, it's a 35-team field which is very important for our head-to-head record for our ranking."
The 35-team field features schools from 19 different conferences, including five teams from the Missouri Valley Conference.
"This is an opportunity for us to set ourselves apart from a lot of teams," Sligh said. "I'm looking for more consistent scoring and also for us to be a little sharper around the greens than last week. We have five seniors traveling this trip, so it will be a special tournament for everyone."
