ISU Women's Basketball Adds Freshman Transfer Janelle Cannon

Aug. 18, 2010

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's basketball team added another transfer to its roster Wednesday, as Janelle Cannon of Wheeling, Ill., joined the Redbirds, head coach Stephanie Glance announced. Cannon signed an NLI with Minnesota last year and was taking summer classes, but chose to transfer to ISU before the fall semester began.

Since Cannon was enrolled in classes this summer at Minnesota, she will have to sit out the 2010-11 season at Illinois State due to NCAA eligibility requirements. She will begin play with the Redbirds in 2011-12 with four years of eligibility remaining.

"Janelle Cannon brings athleticism and skill to our team," Glance said. "She will sit out a year which will enable her to learn our system and have more time to make the transition from high school to college. Janelle has the potential to be a great player at ISU!"

Cannon was a three-year starter at Wheeling High School, guiding the Wildcats to an overall record of 87-11 and three-straight Mid-Suburban League titles. She was a three-time all-conference and all-area selection.

In 2009, Wheeling went 33-2, setting a school record for wins, and finished third in the IHSA Class AA State Tournament at Redbird Arena. Cannon averaged 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.9 steals that season, earning third-team all-state recognition. As a senior, Cannon averaged 19.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.4 steals and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career.

Cannon joins former Wisconsin guard Jamie Russell as transfers from Big Ten schools to join ISU this summer.
