Dean Karnazes to Speak at The Reggies October 10

NORMAL, Ill. - The 11th annual Reggies, presented by State Farm Insurance, will be held Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. in Redbird Arena. Dean Karnazes, the "Ultramarathon Man", will serve as the keynote speaker at the gala event that celebrates the academic achievements of Illinois State student-athletes from the 2009-10 academic year.

The Reggies will honor all of the Redbird student-athletes who were named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll during the 2009-10 academic year. Several other awards will be presented to outstanding student-athletes for various academic achievements, including the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.

Karnazes is an acclaimed endurance athlete and best-selling author. He gained national notoriety by running 50 marathons in 50-consecutive days in 50 different states, finishing the feat with the New York City Marathon. He has completed other amazing physical feats, including running 350 continuous miles, competing in 10 200-mile relay races by himself and running in Death Valley and the South Pole. His first book, Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner, was a New York Times Bestseller and was the No. 7 sports book worldwide. His second book, 50/50-How to Achieve Super Endurance, was released in 2008 and has received national acclaim as an inspirational book for runners.

TIME magazine named Karnazes one of the "Top 100 Most Influential People In the World" in 2007. He has been a guest on 60 Minutes, The Late Show with David Letterman, ESPN and CNN and has been featured in Newsweek, USA Today, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, Runner's World and Men's Health.
