The 2011 Illinois State Athletics Hall of Fame class was officially announced Tuesday, as Stacia Beste-Klasen (cross country/track and field), an NCAA All-American and eight-time Missouri Valley Conference champion; Tony Jones (football), a finalist for the 1991 Walter Payton Award and two-time first team All-Valley selection; Michael McKenny (basketball), the starting point guard on the Redbirds' three-straight NCAA Tournament teams during the early 1980s; Derrick Sanders (basketball), Illinois State's leading scorer and rebounder in 1986 and 1987, while earning All-Valley honors; and Annie Wayland (soccer), a four-time Valley first-team honoree and the school's and Valley's all-time leader in career goals and points.
In addition to the 2011 Hall of Fame class, the Shirley Lockett Family, who has been a fixture at athletic events held in Redbird Arena for close to a decade, will be honored with the Campbell "Stretch" Miller Award. The award is named for Campbell Miller, a former Redbird athlete who went on to broadcast Illinois State games in the 1940s before joining the St. Louis Cardinals broadcasting team. The award named in his honor celebrates the contributions of those whose main services were not playing or coaching, but were important to the program's success.
The honorees will be officially introduced during the Hall of Fame banquet at 8 a.m. Oct. 15 in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Center on the Illinois State University campus. The class will also be recognized during halftime of the Illinois State-South Dakota football game later that day. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
