March 6, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - Freshman Emmie Marx of the Illinois State women's tennis team was named the Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for the first time in her career as a Redbird after her performances against Eastern Illinois and Butler.

Marx has only been playing for the team since January of 2012.

In her opening weekend in the No. 2 singles position for the Redbirds, Marx posted a 2-0 record against Illinois State's victories against Eastern Illinois (7-0) and Butler (6-1). Marx defeated Butler's Gabrielle Rubenstein, 6-2, 6-4, and Eastern Illinois' Merritt Whitley, 6-2, 6-0. On the season, she posts an overall record of 6-3, including a 4-3 record in the third flight.

"Emmie has been a great addition to the team," said head coach Chris Hoover. "She's been playing better and better each weekend, and I'm excited to see where she will go. Being named Athlete of the Week is a well-deserved honor."

Marx leads the Illinois State women's tennis team as they head to Hawaii for spring break, taking on three teams over the week. The Redbirds will be taking on BYU Hawaii, Hawaii and Hawaii-Pacific.
