Women's Golf Ready for Marilynn Smith Sunflower Tournament

Sept. 21, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will head to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Tournament, its third tournament of the season, Monday and Tuesday. The competition will be three rounds of play, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m., Monday, while the final round will be played Tuesday at 8 a.m. Kansas' Alvamar Golf Course, the site of the tournament, is a 6,636-yard, par-72 configuration

The Redbirds will look for another stellar performance from senior Katie Jean, who is averaging a score of 219 this season. The squad began the season with an exceptional performance from Jean, who won the Redbird Invitational individual title, while propelling the Redbirds to a second-place finish. Last week's Cardinal Cup, however, proved to be a test, as they finished in 11th place.

Others competing for the Redbirds will be junior Rachel Powers, who finished 27th at the Cardinal Cup. Junior Jordyn Wyzgowski, sophomore Hayley Guyton and freshman Courtnee Cossell will round out the Redbird lineup. Competing as an individual will be junior Carlee Cossell.

The Redbirds will compete against 12 other teams, including Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Florida Gulf Coast, Kansas, Kansas State, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri-Kansas City, New Mexico State, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa and Oral Roberts. The tournament field also includes Missouri Valley Conference rival Wichita State.
