Carmichael Named Finalist For Lou Henson Award

Feb. 25, 2013

BOSTON - Illinois State senior forward Jackie Carmichael is one of 25 national finalists for the 2013 Lou Henson Award, announced by CollegeInsider.com Monday. The award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in college basketball.

For the second-straight year, CollegeInsider.com is working with Point3 Basketball to promote the Lou Henson award "fan vote," which will constitute 33 percent of the final vote.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson, who retired after an illustrious coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005, he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins, with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State, and he is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

Carmichael is currently averaging 17.8 points and a Missouri Valley Conference-best 9.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 69.9 percent at the free throw line. The Manhattan, Kan., native has collected 13 double-doubles and netted double figures in 20 out of his last 21 games this year. Carmichael has also grabbed 10 or more rebounds 14 times this season, plus he has nine games with three or more blocks.

Along with holding the career-blocked shots record (189), the senior forward ranks ninth on ISU's career-scoring list, with 1,522 points, fifth on the career-free throws list with 409, and fourth on the career-rebounding list with 910. He also ranks third on the Redbird career double-doubles list. Illinois State is 16-13 this season heading into Wednesday's senior night matchup against Missouri State, with $5 upper bowl tickets available.

The 2013 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, the site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
