AKRON, Ohio – After the final round of play at the Firestone Invitational Tuesday, the Illinois State men's golf team finished tied for 12th place with Eastern Kentucky, carding a team score of 879 (291-293-295). Freshman Trent Wallace continued his excellent play through the third round, leading the Redbirds with a total score of 214 (71-72-71). Wallace finished the tournament tied for 12th place on the individual leaderboards.
Wallace received recognition from head coach Ray Kralis following another great outing from the freshman, while he discussed his expectations for the Redbirds in closing out the fall schedule.
"Another nice finish by our freshman Trent Wallace," Kralis said. "We showed moments of greatness. Yet glimpses are not reality. We have to make big strides to round out our fall season."
Both sophomore Zach Burry (74-73-77) and junior Christian Crabill (73-78-73) finished the tournament 10 strokes behind Wallace, tied for 55th place on the individual leaderboards, carding a 224 through three rounds of play. Junior Kyle Meihofer ended the tournament with a 225 (73-73-79), while senior Tyler Gentilella posted a 227 (78-75-74) to wrap up the tournament.
Out of the field of 16 teams, Maryland finished the tournament in first place with a team score of 856 (284-285-287). Akron posted a team score just two strokes behind Maryland, carding a three-round total of 858 (290-283-285), while Old Dominion (290-289-285) finished the tournament in third place.
The Redbirds will seek to regain momentum during their two-week break before they head to Georgetown to compete in the Georgetown Intercollegiate, which will conclude the fall schedule for Illinois State.
