TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Illinois State sophomore Zach Burry shot a 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the Seminole Intercollegiate Friday, as the Redbirds placed 13th after the first round of competition at SouthWood Golf Club.

James Madison paced the competition with a 6-under-par 282, followed closely by Jacksonville two shots behind with a 284. Â The host Florida State Seminoles, who are currently ranked No. 4 in the national rankings, sit in a three-way tie for third with East Tennessee State and Troy with scores of 285. Â The 14-team field includes 10 teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 100 and four teams ranked in the Top 50.Â
Burry rebounded from a tough first nine holes, which he finished at 2-over-par, but shot three under on the back nine to finish with the 71. Michael Mounce finished in a tie for 39th with a 74, while Christian Crabill shot 76 and Trent Wallace fired a 77. Â Branden Mounce rounded out the Redbird lineup with an 81 on the first day of competition.
"Zach was solid today and played even better than his 71 shows," head coach Ray Kralis said. "Michael continues to show glimpses of his potential and gave us another good score. While we didn't get as much help from the third and fourth scores as we are capable of, we were only a couple swings away from getting it done. We need to stay patient and continue to work the process, and I am confident we'll show more depth in our performances.Â
The teams will play 36 holes Saturday to finish the tournament, with inclement weather expected for Sunday's originally scheduled third round. Live stats throughout the day will be provided on Golfstat.com, with updates coming every three holes.
