TULSA, Okla. – Monday started out well for the Illinois State men's golf team, as the Redbirds carded a 9-over-par 297 in the opening round of the ORU Shootout, hosted by Oral Roberts, at the par-72 Forest Ridge Golf Club. Senior Tyler Gentilella was in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard after firing a 1-under-par 71, and freshman Trent Wallace was right behind in fourth place with an even-par 72. But ISU struggled in the second round and collectively finished with a 313, which dropped the Redbirds to fifth place in the 11-team field with a two-round score of 610, 27 strokes behind leader Arkansas State.
"Trent and Tyler played very solid in the opening round and put us in a great position as a team," head coach Ray Kralis said. "While I hoped we would separate ourselves a bit more as play continued, we missed that opportunity and went the other way. Big number holes haunted us in the second round, and we missed the low score or two that we have come to count on."
Junior Christian Crabill and sophomore Zach Burry rounded out the scoring for ISU in the first round. Crabill finished with a 4-over-par 76, while Burry ended with a 78. Freshman Michael Mounce also competed for the Redbirds, but his round of 84 did not count towards the team's overall score.
Burry paced ISU in the second round with a 4-over-par 76, shedding two strokes off his opening-round score. Wallace and Mounce both carded 78's, with Mounce improving his score by six strokes, and Gentilella shot an 81 to conclude the team scoring for the round. Crabill's 83 did not count towards the team's second-round total.
Wallace sits in a tie for 16th place with a 6-over-par 150 (72-78), and Gentiella is two strokes behind with an 8-over-par 152 (71-81). Burry finished the day with a 154 (78-76), Crabill a 159 (76-83) and Mounce a 162 (84-78).
"The golf course is very demanding and will put up a fight again tomorrow, but I do look for us to rise to the challenge and finish off the regular season on a strong note," Kralis said.
The Redbirds conclude the tournament Tuesday morning with the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
