CARBONDALE, Ill. -Â The Illinois State men's tennis team narrowly dropped its Missouri Valley Conference opener, 4-3, at Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon.
Illinois State fell behind early by dropping the doubles point to SIU, falling in all three double matches. The Redbirds went on to win points in No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Christoffer Greve bested Peter Molloy, 6-0, 3-0, to tally the first point for the Redbirds. Teammate Andreas Boers followed suit by defeating Alex Pozo, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. The current leader in wins for the season, Dylan Steffens, gained another victory by beating Daniel Martinez, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Steffens leads the team for the spring season with a 16-1 mark and an overall season record of 23-6. However, the Salukis earned wins in No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles to edge Illinois State.
Now 8-11, the Redbirds will prepare to play UMKC, in Kansas City, Missouri, next Friday, April 15 at 12 p.m.
