ST. LOUIS – Illinois State volleyball libero Kaity Weimerskirch was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week this week after combining for more than 50 digs over the Redbirds' two matches over the weekend.
The junior captain for the Redbirds led the defensive charge in the back row, finishing the two-game swing with 51 digs for an average of 5.67 digs/set. The junior put up her 11th 20+ dig performance of the season with 25 in the Redbirds' four-set win over the previously undefeated Loyola-Chicago and her 12th 20+ dig effort with 26 in ISU's five-set thriller win over Valparaiso.
With her 51 digs over the two-game stretch, Weimerskirch joined Illinois State's 1,000-career dig club and became the 16th Redbird in school history to achieve the milestone. She is one of just nine active players in the Missouri Valley Conference to reach 1,000 career digs.
The MVC Defensive Player of the Week honor is the second of Weimerskirch's career after previously earning the honor as a freshman in the fall of 2019.
