Illinois State Prepares For Match At Indiana To Start Spring Break

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 2022 spring break trip will start in Bloomington for Illinois State, and not the one they call home. The Redbirds will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, on Friday to take on the Indiana Hoosiers at the IU Tennis Center to kick off their annual spring break trip that includes three matches in Las Vegas.

"I am very much looking forward to playing Indiana on Friday," ISU head Coach Mark Klysner said. "Any time you get to play a power five program of their level, it's a great opportunity to see where we are at as a team at this point of the spring. I feel like we've really been hitting our stride and I really think we can give them a tough match, so we will see how it ends up."

The Redbirds have won four out of their last five matches, overall, including their last two against Marquette and Ball State in strong fashion. Last Wednesday against the Cardinals, ISU rolled to a 6-1 victory over nationally-ranked BSU thanks to some strong doubles play and key singles wins. Nam Pham was 2-0 on the day, winning with partner Ming-Chieh Chiu in doubles before picking up a gutsy three-set win at No. 1 singles. Newcomer Arvid Hjalte was also a double winner for the Redbirds, winning at No. 1 doubles with Zane Kohrs and picking up a quick win at No. 6 singles.

Indiana heads into the match with a 4-5 record this spring, most recently dropping a 4-0 match to Louisville last Saturday. In their first road match of the season, the Hoosiers fell behind when Louisville swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Indiana then dropped all first sets in singles, and Louisville won singles matches at No. 1, 3 and 6 to clinch the match.
