LEXINGTON, Ky. – For the 14th-consecutive year, the Illinois State volleyball program was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its continued success in the classroom. On Monday, the Redbirds were presented with the United States Marine Corps (USMC)/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2021-22 season.
Illinois State was also part of the 2021-22 NCAA Division I Honor Roll, meaning the team's GPA was in the top 20% of Division I programs.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team grade-point average (GPA) on a 5.0 scale.
Illinois State turned in a 3.67 GPA as a team to finish out the 2021-22 academic school year. Five student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, while 17 Redbirds earned a spot on the Honor Roll in the spring.
The Redbirds won the 2021 MVC Tournament title, making their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 17th overall. Illinois State is scheduled to open the season at Cincinnati on August 26.
