ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The second day of action for Illinois State at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was filled with doubles matches and a key singles match, as the Redbirds looked to advance to the weekend.
"We started the day with Adrian (Dibildox) playing the final round of qualifying and although he didn't manage to pull out the win, I still think he played well and had his chances to get the victory. With the doubles matches starting in the afternoon, we played extremely well overall. We got some pretty tough seeded teams in our matchups, but we sure did give them everything they could handle on each court."
After winning a pair of qualifying matches on Thursday to advance to the round of 16 on Friday, Dibildox was not able to get back Wisconsin's Matthew Fullerton and fell by a score of 6-3, 6-3 as his tournament on the singles side ended.
As action moved to the doubles, the Redbirds were paired against some tough Big Ten opponents and against an-instate rival. The duo of Arvid Hjalte and Adrian Dibildox picked up the lone win in the first round, defeating the team of Elliott Dam and Artem Iermolov of UIC by a final of 8-5 to move onto the second round. The Redbirds' other two pairings of Tin Ostro and Emiliano Gonzalez and Nam Pham and Tomas Valencia suffered first-round defeats and their runs came to an end.
In the second round, Hjalte and Dibildox had their chance to square off against a Big Ten foe as they took on the team of Mathis Debru and Kenta Miyoshi. Unfortunately for the Redbirds, the Illini duo picked up the win 8-5 to advance on in the bracket
Pham, the lone Redbird remaining in the draw, will compete for the first time in singles at the ITA Regionals on Saturday, when he competes in the singles main draw against Bryce Nakashima of Ohio State at 10:30 a.m.
