Redbirds Sweep Northern Iowa, 7-0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team wrapped up their first home conference weekend on Sunday afternoon, as the Redbirds faced off with MVC foe UNI and rolled to a 7-0 win over the Panthers at the Evergreen Racquet Club.

The Redbirds got out to a quick start, sweeping the doubles matches to secure the first point of the contest. The No. 1 team of Tara Damnjanovic and Tijana Zlatanovic rolled to a 6-1 win before it was the no. 3 team of Elena Jankulovska and Nevena Kolarevic securing the point with their 6-3 win on court No. 3. For good measure, the No. 2 team of Alexandra Abyasova and Silvia Pomarolli battled to a 6-4 win to secure the sweep.

In singles action, ISU secured straight-set wins in each of the six matches. Kolarevic would the first Redbird to finish for the second straight day, this time by a final of 6-2, 6-2 over UNI's Lorena Cardoso. Following soon after, Jankulovska remained in control as she gathered a 6-1, 6-1 win on court no. 6 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Redbirds. A 6-3, 6-2 win by Zlatanovic at the No. 1 spot then secured the match for the Redbirds, with three more matches left on the courts.

Pomarolli was next to secure a win for the Redbirds, as she completed a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Thaissa Moreira at the no. 5 spot to make it 5-0 in favor of ISU. Her doubles partner Abyasova was next with her 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot and Damnjanovic closed things out on court No. 4 with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win over UNI's Kim Zizek.

The Redbirds will return to action on Thursday, March 30, as they remain at home and host the Murray State Racers in Bloomington. First serve is set for noon between the Redbirds and Racers.
