Illinois State cornerback Alfred Corbin has been named the Rawlings Gateway Football Conference defensive player of the week for his efforts in the Redbirds 64-0 win over Prairie View A&M, here, Saturday.
Corbin, a junior from Wildwood, Fla., intercepted two passes and returned each of them 40 yards. He also blocked a punt, which Justin Frierson returned 28 yards for a Redbird touchdown. In addition, Corbin logged four tackles and one pass broken up.
Coupled with his interception in the 21-0 win at Indiana State, Corbin now has three interceptions over the last two games.
For the second straight week, Illinois States defense shut out the Redbird opponent. That had not happened since the second and third games of the 1961 season at ISU. These are the first back-to-back shutouts ever posted by a Gateway member and Illinois States current scoreless quarter streak of nine is also thought to be the longest in league history.
ISU hosts Southern Illinois this Saturday at 1 p.m.
