The Illinois State mens tennis team continued to compete in the 2000 Region V ITA Mid-American Championships in Tulsa, Ok. Friday and Saturday.
On Friday in the opening round of the mens singles match, Yew Ming Si came up short against Colorados Justin Hunter, 6-0, 6-3. Si managed to fight back on Saturday in the consolation match defeating Troy Gillham of Evansville, 6-2, 6-4, in round one and David OConnell of Indiana State in round two. His downfall came in round three against Colorados Bryan Knepper. Scores were not available for the OConnell and Knepper matches.
Elezaar Magallan of Kansas defeated Ricky Heath in mens singles on Friday, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Heath came back swinging in the consolation round defeating Oklahomas Julio Martinez in the opening match, 6-2, 6-2, and Jan Vanco of Southwest Missouri State in the second round.
In the quarterfinals, Heath flew past Tulsas Micah Zomer, 8-5, but could not get past Knepper in the semi-final round. Scores were not available for the Vanco and Knepper matches.
Jason Smit retired due to injury in round one of mens singles against Tim Miller of Drake, 7-6. Smit returned in the consolation round on Saturday, but could not get past Adnan Hadzialic of Nebraska. Score not available for Hadzialic match.
Heath and Si joined forces for mens doubles on Friday, but fell short to Colorados duo of Hunter and Knepper, 8-5.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
