Linebacker Galen Scott and kicker/punter Jake Strader have been named Rawlings Gateway Football Conference Players of the Week for their work in Illinois States 27-17 win over Southern Illinois here last Saturday.
Scott, the defensive player of the week, registered a game-high 10 tackles, including one for a one-yard loss. He also forced two fumbles, including one that was converted into a touchdown by the Redbird offense. The other denied SIU on a fourth down play.
Illinois State limited the Salukis to just 95 rushing yards on 43 attempts (2.2/carry) and allowed the Salukis just 309 total yards despite the fact that Southern had the ball for 34 minutes, 22 seconds.
Strader, the special teams player of the week, punted eight times for a modest 36.9-yard average, but three of his eight boots were downed inside the 20-yard-line. He also made all three of his PAT kicks and both field goal attempts -- 25 and 22 yards.
Illinois State, now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Gateway Football Conference, plays at Western Illinois, Saturday.
