Sparked by her nine kills and 10 digs in the first game of Illinois States 3-0 victory at Creighton, junior right-side hitter Abby Lewis has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
Lewis, who had 21 kills in 44 attempts with just one hitting error, hit .455 for six games over the weekend while leading the Redbirds to key conference road wins at Drake and Creighton. In Des Moines, she had 6 kills in 16 attempts and served 13 of Illinois States 45 points in the match.
In Omaha, she had 15 kills in 28 attempts with just one error, falling just one short of her career high in kills. Her 20 digs marked the fourth time in 11 matches since the Normal West High School graduate became the starting right-side hitter in the Redbird lineup that she has recorded 20 or more digs. For the week, Lewis averaged 3.5 kills and 4.0 digs per game.
Its the first time Lewis has been honored by the Missouri Valley as Player of the Week, but the fourth time an Illinois State player has earned the honor this season. Kendra Haselhorst has been honored twice and Jackie Utz once for the Redbirds, who are 17-8 overall, 14-2 in the Valley heading into home matches vs. league leader Northern Iowa (Friday) and I-74 rival Bradley (Saturday). Both are at 7 p.m. in Redbird Arena.
