Friganovic, Suurvarik Advance at Regionals

After posting two wins apiece Illinois States Zana Friganovic and Liina Suurvarik both advance to the Round of 16 of the qualifying round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional. In the opening round, Friganovic needed three sets to beat Wisconsins Katie Dougherty (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3). The win matched Friganovic, a native of Tucson, Ariz., against Jessica Strickland of Northwestern. Two sets were all that was necessary in round two for Friganovic to knock Strickland out of competition, 6-1, 6-4. Suurvarik, a freshman from Tallin, Estonia, defeated Melissa Roach from ball State in her first round match (6-3, 6-3) to play Marquettes Vero Briseno in the second round. After cruising to a first set win, Suurvarik was taken to a tie-breaker in the second set and escaped with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory. Winning Friday in the Round of 16 will advance Friganovic and Suurvarik to the main draw beginning Saturday morning at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
