Mikalayeva, Suurvarik Drop to Consolation Bracket

After experiencing success early in the week at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional, Liina Suurvarik and teammate Alesia Mikalayeva dropped their first matches of the tournament moving them into the consolation bracket. Mikalayeva drew the No. 9 seed, Shannon Duffy of Northwestern and lost in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Suurvarik, who advanced through the qualifier into the main draw, lost the first match of her young college career to the No. 2 seed, Ohio States Kristy Dascoli, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles action, Mikalayeva and Suurvarik fell to Duffy and her Northwestern teammate Marine Piriou, 9-7. It was just a bad day, head coach Chris Hoover said. They both played good players in though matches. They did their best and kept their heads up. Im a firm believer that adversity builds character. Consolation play begins Sunday morning in both singles and doubles at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
