Suurvarik Moves Into Main Draw of ITA Regional

Illinois State freshman Liina Suurvarik upended Notre Dames Alicia Salas (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the main draw of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional. Zana Friganovic needed a win against Iowas Erica Johnson to advance to the main draw, but came up short (6-1, 6-2). Liina played really well today, head coach Chris Hoover said. Zana just didnt play very well and she suffered a bad loss. The win faces Suurvarik against the No.2 seed, Kristy Dascoli from Ohio State. Alesia Mikalayeva, an automatic qualifier to the main draw, drew the No. 9 seed, Northwesterns Shannon Duffy. Its good to get busy and player the top players right away, Hoover said. Liinas playing tough and hopefully the matches she played in the qualifying round she can use to her advantage. Dascoli hasnt played in the last few days which will be an advantage. Mikalayeva and Suurvarik pair up in doubles play in morning action at the Michigan Varsity Tennis Center when they take on Duffy and her partner Marine Piriou. Main draw doubles begin at 8:30 a.m. while singles play gets underway in the afternoon.
