Freshman Liina Suurvarik of the Illinois State womens tennis team defeated Rebecca Hawkins 6-4, 6-7(3), 10-8 to advance to the quarterfinals round in the consolation bracket of the 2000 ITA Midwest Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., Sunday.
Teammate Alesia Mikalayeva fell to Toni Neykova of Northern Illinois 6-0, 6-3 in the same bracket. Suurvarik will meet Szilvia Kelemen of DePaul Monday in the quarterfinals round of the consolation bracket in the tournament hosted by the University of Michigan.
In doubles action, Mikalayeva and Suurvarik defeated Erika Mainhardt and Maria Pandele in the third round of doubles play in the main draw doubles consolation bracket. The Redbird twosome will face Lisa DAmelio, the No. 9 seed out of Eastern Michigan, and her teammate Rebecca Hawkins in the quarterfinals doubles round on Monday.
