Four Redbirds on All-District Academic Team

Illinois State football players Scott Cook, Andy King, Adam Waugh and Ted Wulf have been named to the Verizon All-District V Academic Football Team that was announced today. All four are now eligible for consideration on the academic all-America ballot. No school exceeded Illinois States total of four honorees. This marks the eighth consecutive year that the Redbird program has had representation on the all-district team and it is the third straight year that more than one ISU player has been so honored. The District V team is chosen annually from I-A and I-AA football players from the four-state region of Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Cook, a senior defensive end from Oswego, is on the team for a third consecutive year. He has started six games this season and has 22 tackles, including four sacks. He carries a 3.29 grade point average in Finance. King, a junior offensive tackle from Lincoln, is on the Verizon team for the first time, although he was a second-team All-Gateway Academic honoree last season. He has started all nine games for Division I-AAs No. 15-ranked team in total offense. King, an elected representative in ISUs student government, carries a 3.49 grade point average in Telecommunications Management. Waugh, a junior outside linebacker from Libertyville, Ill., was a rare unanimous selection to the all-district team. He carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Political Science and was named Illinois States Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 1999. He has started all nine games this season and has been credited with 51 tackles. Wulf, a junior center from Bloomington, Ill., makes his second straight appearance on the all-district team. Like King, he has started all nine games for one of I-AAs highest ranked units. The Redbirds rank among I-AAs top 30 in total offense, rushing offense and passing offense. To be considered for the Verizon team, student-athletes must be a starter or an important reserve, who carries a minimum grade point average of 3.20. The voting is done by sports information directors.
