Illinois State University Athletics

Swimming/Diving Team Signs First Recruit

Simone Leger has signed a National Letter of Intent with Illinois State University to swim and continue her education. Leger a backstroker and sprint freestyler comes to ISU from Union, IL (as did ISU volleyball setter Becky Weber). Leger attended Huntley High School, and although they did not have a team she represented the school for four years as an individual swimmer at the high school sectional meet. Leger has been a YMCA swimmer for 12 years and is a three-time national YMCA qualifier (1997,1998, and 2000). Head coach Steve Paska believes that Leger exemplifies exactly what a student-athlete should represent. Even though she is undecided on her major she was very impressed with the variety of options we have to offer, said Paska. She was also very impressed with the study center. I know she will represent Illinois State in a fine fashion. What I like best about Simone is the fact that she is so committed to the sport, said Paska. This commitment he believes is shown in Legers willingness to travel from Union to McHenry and other places several times a week to train. Legers addition to the Redbird roster marks the start of the 2001-2002 freshman class.
