Nailing down five of the 12 first-team selections, Illinois State dominated the All-Gateway Football Conference Academic Team that was announced today.
ISUs previous high for first-team picks was two in 1994, the first year the team was chosen.
Illinois States first-team honorees were quarterback
Dusty Burk (3.52 in marketing, Tuscoloa, Ill.), offensive tackle Andy King (3.49 in telecommunications management, Lincoln, Ill.), offensive tackle Aaron Peterson (3.61 in anthropology, Rhinelander, Wis.), outside linebacker Adam Waugh (4.00 in political science, Libertyville, Ill.) and center Ted Wulf (3.43 in finance, Bloomington, Ill.).
ISU defensive end Scott Cook (3.29 in finance, Oswego, Ill.) was named to the second team, while tight end Mark Schaeve (3.27 in political science, Verona, Wis.) was an honorable mention pick.
Players must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 to be considered for the team and must have concluded one full academic year at the institution. Ordinarily the team includes 11 players on the first team, 11 on the second team and an honorable mention list irrespective of position. This years first team included 12 first-team players because of a tie in the voting, which is done by the leagues sports information directors.
