Cathy Peverly, senior shortstop on the Illinois State softball team, claimed all-American honors, today, as she was named to the 2000 Division I GTE Academic All-American second-team.
Peverly, a native of El Paso, Ill., was one of only two GTE Academic all-Americans to hold a perfect 4.0 GPA. The math education major was the second softball player in as many years from Illinois State to nab the honor. Heather Stella was the other Redbird player to receive the honor in 1999.
Also named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete, Peverly has been a member of the Anderson Financial Network Athletics Honor Roll all four semesters at Illinois State after transferring from Illinois Central College. Her academic and athletic accomplishments as a Redbird also landed a first-team selection on the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team.
Illinois State softball head coach
Melinda Fischer said she is extremely proud of Peverly and all she has accomplished while being a student and athlete at Illinois State.
"Pev is just an outstanding student and I dont know if she has ever had a B in her life," Fischer said. "She is on top of everything, academically and athletically, and is the caliber of person you would want on your side on and off the field.
"She really takes pride in her performances, being the feather in the cap of our program for over two years. By doing the little things most people dont think of and by setting such a terrific example as a student-athlete, you wish you had about 15 to 16 more of her on your team. It is a tremendous honor for Pev, and the whole program and university is proud of her."
