Alvin Williamson, an assistant mens basketball coach at Illinois State since the spring of 1998, has resigned that position to join the coaching staff at Tulane.
The former Tulsa University point guard will join new Tulane head coach Shawn Finney, who was an assistant coach with the Golden Hurricane during Williamsons playing days. Most recently, Finney was an assistant coach at Kentucky.
Williamson was hired at Illinois State by former Redbird head coach Kevin Stallings. He was retained as an assistant coach when Tom Richardson, himself a former ISU assistant, was promoted to the head coaching spot in the spring of 1999.
We appreciate everything Alvin brought to our program, Richardson said. He was a very positive force for our team.
Tulane represents a good opportunity for him to work under a coach and system that he knows very well. I wish him a lot of success in his new job.
Richardson said he hopes to move somewhat quickly in finding a person to fill the vacancy.
With the start of the school year just around the corner, its important that we get someone in place, he said. We wont sacrifice a good hiring process in the meantime, but we will be very diligent in hiring a good person in as short a time period as possible.
Illinois State is attractive to a lot of people. There will be significant interest in the position and I am confident that we will hire a quality coach.
