B.J. Brown shot a 143 to lead the Illinois State mens golf team to tie for second place after the first day of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate golf tournament at Crestwicke Country Club golf course Monday.
The tournament features a field of 17 teams including Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake, which is tied at second with ISU with a 592. Iowa State is leading the tournament nine strokes ahead of ISU and Drake with a first day finish of 583
At the end of first round, the Redbirds sat in fourth place with a score of 297. The Birds rounded out the day with a second round score of 295.
Leading the Redbirds is junior B.J. Brown (143), tied for second place. Junior Adam Goldie missed qualification for a team spot in the tournament but fired a first round low of 69, placing him in a tie for sixth with an overall score of 144.
Senior Nic Baker trails Goldie by two strokes with a 146 and is tied for 12th. Senior Dan Cerny (147) is tied for 14th place, while seniors Dave Klaas (156) and Greg Morgan (156) are tied at 58th.
Competing as individuals for the Birds along with Goldie are freshmen Brian Anderson (155) and Jason Stuckwisch (155), who are tied at 53rd.
Illinois State head coach Harland Kilborn is pleased with some of the individual play he saw today, but says the other Redbirds must follow in order for the Birds to contend for the Weibring title.
B.J. [Brown] played solid and Nic Baker had a good, solid performance. We have to get some guys who can take it under par and keep it there, Kilborn said. The idea is to make up nine strokes Tuesday -- to do that, everyone will have to contribute. We need five guys playing real solid for us to have a chance to make a move on Iowa State.
The final round of the tournament begins at 8:30 a.m.
