After three consecutive wins, including a shutout over regionally-ranked Illinois, the Illinois State womens soccer team takes its winning act on the road as the Redbirds face Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, September 29, and Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday, October 1.
Illinois State enters the weekend of action with a 6-2 record, 1-1 in the Valley. The Redbirds have won three straight games with victories over Butler, Illinois and Belmont. Wisconsin-Milwaukee is 3-5-1 with wins over Central and Western Michigan, while Wisconsin-Green Bay holds a 2-5 record. Last year, the Redbirds defeated UW-Milwaukee 2-0 and UW-Green Bay 3-2, both at Adelaide Street Field.
Annie Wayland continues to lead an explosive Redbird offense, with eight goals on the season, leading the team and the Valley in goals and points. She scored three of those last weekend, one against the Fighting Illini and two against Belmont.
Reigning Valley Defensive Player of the Week Becky Feldmann has been constant between the posts for Illinois State, leading the league in goals against average with 0.61. She posted her third and fourth shutouts of the season in the Redbirds last two wins.
Head coach Pete Kowall said this weekends contests will be a good test, considering his team is on the road playing different, good-quality teams.
Milwaukee is a decent team and it will be a good game, similar to the Evansville and Illinois games, Kowall said. We are looking forward to the road games and it will be tough, but I think we are up to the task and looking forward to it.
Green Bay is also a good team and it is good we are playing them on Sunday so we know we have a job to do, we can go there and do it and then get back home, Kowall continued. Then we have the rest of the year at home or close to home in terms of matches and getting some more wins.
