Kevin Zouzounis, a quarterback from City College of San Francisco, has signed a national letter of intent with Illinois State.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder, will begin taking classes at Illinois State during the upcoming spring semester and will have two years of playing eligibility remaining.
As a sophomore, Zouzounis completed 112-of-183 passes for 1,984 yards with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions. Against Sacramento City College, he completed 26-of-40 passes for 488 yards with three TDs and one interception and against Chabot he was 28-of-47 for a school-record 511 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in a game in which San Francisco set a California junior college record with 786 total yards.
As a freshman, he started three games and threw for more than 300 yards in each.
He was an all-conference performer as a sophomore and was a five-time state player of the week.
We like his stature, said ISU head coach Denver Johnson. He can throw the long ball, put some heat on it when he has to and he can throw the touch pass.
He played in a very wide open passing offense and has a lot of background in a system that will transfer nicely to what we are doing here.
Zouzounis played his sophomore season in a platoon system with University of Washington signee Taylor Barton. The two traded starting assignments every other week.
We had two very good quarterbacks and it was hard to settle on just one, said San Francisco City Offensive Coordinator Dan Hayes. It was a unique situation, but it worked out well.
So well, in fact, that San Francisco notched its second straight 12-0 record and was dubbed the national junior college champion by JC Gridwire. It marked the first time in Gridwires 41-year history that a team repeated as national champion.
Kevin is not a fiery, verbal guy, but he is great under pressure, Hayes said. Hes the same on the headphones in a crucial situation as he might be on a Tuesday morning.
He understands whats going on with the defense and his knowledge of the game is very good.
A native of Burlingame, Calif., Zouzounis attended Junipero Serra High School, the same high school that produced major league baseball great Barry Bonds, in San Mateo, Calif.
A three-time all-leaguer in football, he also enjoyed an outstanding baseball career. He led Serra to a state baseball championship and a No. 24 national ranking while setting the school mark for home runs. In junior college baseball, he tossed a one-hitter.
Zouzounis is the third recruit to sign with ISU thus far. Receiver Nolan Gatewood and linebacker Greg Helle, both from Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College, signed last week.
