Rebounding from a a 7-0 loss to Louisville on Friday, the Illinois State men's tennis team swept Western Kentucky 7-0 Saturday for its first win of the young season.
At No. 1,
Ricky Heath handled Michale Lindskoa (6-3, 6-1). Senior
Yew Ming Si defeated Evalds Jurans (6-2, 6-1) at No. 2 while fellow senior
Albert Piasecki won his match at No. 3 over J.J. Ball (6-2, 6-3).
Jason Smit easily defeated Dhawal Goyal at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0) and
Brent Steven defeated Martins Jaunzems at No. 5 after a close first set (7-6,6-3). Newcomer Thommas de Liefde struggled at No. 6, but took Wimal Wijenayake to three sets to win his first collegiate match (6-7, 6-4, 6-2).
In doubles play, the teams of Heath/Si and Smit/Steven each defeated their WKU opponents 8-3. At No. 3 Piasecki teamed with
Andy Martin to beat Lindskoa/Wijenayake 9-7.
The 'Birds return to action Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Tournament.
