The parents and families of the Illinois State softball team reminded the players just where they got their skills Sunday afternoon on Parents Day at the Redbird Softball Complex. The team of parents and families overcame their Redbird daughters, sisters, and friends in a 3-2 thriller.
Head coach
Melinda Fischer nominated candidates for bests of the game in four different categories: play of the game, running play of the game, swing of the game, and imitation of the game.
The play of the game went to Roy Slate, stepfather of junior catcher Melissa Baker, for his sliding shoestring grab in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Charlie Hustle running play of the game went to Dina Carr, mother of freshman outfielder Erin Carr, when she took the shortest route from first to third, slashing across the diamond to put herself in scoring position.
Jim Scott, father of junior infielder Abbie Scott, got the Doans Back Pain Reliever Swing of the Game when he came up empty on cut that even Babe Ruth would appreciate.
And finally the Dana Carvey Imitation of the Game goes to sophomore outfielder Katie Hanko when she made her trip to the mound to calm down Cutie Wild Thing Taylor in an Oscar worthy portrayal of pitching coach Bill Kennedy.
The team of parents and families celebrated their victory just as their Redbirds do with a rousing rendition of the Illinois State Fight Song.
After the game the players and families joined in the Redbird Club Room for food and social hour.
The game and social are a great way to end the fall season and provide fellowship amongst the players and families, Fischer said.
