Annie Wayland recorded two goals as the Illinois State soccer team upended Creighton, 2-1, in Missouri Valley Conference play Friday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field.
With the win, the Redbirds extend their winning streak to four games and move to 8-3 overall and a flawless 4-0 in league action. Creighton falls to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the Valley.
The Birds struck early in the first half and never looked back. Wayland drove through the Bluejay defense, picked up a pass from
Chrystal Johnston and sent it to the net for her first goal of the afternoon seven an half minutes into the game.
A little over six minutes later, a shot by
Dana Schulte was blocked by Creighton. Wayland collected the rebound in traffic and drove the ball past goalkeeper Jaimie Thompson, putting the Redbirds ahead 2-0.
The goals were Waylands ninth and 10th of the season, boosting her career total to 44, one shy of Krissy Meek of Evansville who leads the Valley in career goals with 45.
Creightons lone goal of the afternoon was scored by Sara Hovland with 34 seconds remaining in the first half.
Their goal was a bit of a disappointment, head coach
Pete Kowall said. Creighton is a very good team and is solid all the way around. They are aggressive, athletic and well-coached. Any time you beat Creighton its a good game.
The Redbirds return to Adelaide Street Field Sunday afternoon as they take on the Panthers of Eastern Illinois at 1 p.m.
