Birds Head to Regionals

Three members of the Illinois State womens tennis team will compete in the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional at Madison, Wis. this weekend. Liina Suurvarik, named the 2001 Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year last spring, is currently 10-2 for the fall season, and has taken the championship at two of the three tournaments. Suurvarik ended last year with a 30-7 record. Suurvarik returns to the regional championship having made it through the qualifying rounds last year and advancing to the main draw, where she was awarded a berth in the consolation championships. Alesia Mikalayeva, currently 6-6 for the season, has been slowed by a nagging foot injury. Mikalayevas season record last year was 30-9. Laura Gravino, last years Kansas high school state champion, is 8-4 heading into regionals. Gravino brought home the championship at the first tournament of the year for the Redbirds. In doubles, the team of Suurvarik and Mikalayeva will also compete in the regionals championship. This pair, currently 7-2 for the fall season, has taken the championship at two of the three fall tournaments. Last year, this team was 24-5 for the year. The team competed in the regional championship last year and took the consolation championship in the main draw. The championship begins at 9 a.m. Thursday morning at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 30.
