Illinois States Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva advanced in both the singles and the doubles main draws today at the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional.
In singles, both Mikalayeva and Suurvarik are two matches closer to taking the championship.
Mikalayeva defeated both Iowas Cassie Haas (6-2, 6-4), and Indianas Karie Schlukebir (6-1, 6-2) on the first day of competition in the Singles Main Draw.
Suurvarik did equally well, putting away Northwesterns Ruth Barnes (6-3, 6-4), followed by Ohio States Erica Fisk (6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3).
In doubles, Suurvarik/Mikalayeva defeated Toledos Ribero/Rivero (8-3) as well as Northwesterns Petruitiu/Rush (8-5), putting themselves in the quarterfinal round of the Doubles Main Draw.
The action for this pair of Birds continues at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Sunday morning. The tournament runs through Tuesday, Oct. 30.
