The Gateway Football Conference recognized Illinois State junior wide receiver Vito Golsons efforts this weekend in the Redbirds 42-14 win over No. 9 Northern Iowa, Saturday, by naming him the offensive player of the week.
Golson was instrumental in the Birds victory by hauling in six receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns. The yardage total ranks No. 5 in the Illinois State single-game history and helped the Redbirds snap a seven-game losing streak.
Golson secured the Redbirds victory in the third period, when he and junior quarterback Dusty Burk connected on touchdown passes of seven and 75 yards.
Golson, a native of St. Petersburg, Fla., and the Redbirds return to action on November 3, when Illinois State hosts its fifth ranked opponent, No. 10 Western Kentucky, in its last six games. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.
