'Birds Move Into Final Rounds at Regionals

At the 2001 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional today, Illinois State?s Alesia Mikalayeva and Liina Suurvarik both advanced to the quarterfinal round of singles competition, and as a team they advanced to the final round of doubles competition. In singles, ISU?s Alesia Mikalayeva took on Northwestern?s Andrea Yung today, and won (3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4) to advance to the quarterfinal round. ISU?s Liina Suurvarik also advanced to quarterfinals, defeating Purdue?s Lara Burgarello (6-2, 2-6, 6-0). In doubles, the team of Suurvarik/Mikalayeva were successful on the court once again, securing their place in the final round of competition by defeating first Purdue's Iqbal/Burgarello (8-2), and then Notre Dame's Varnum/Green (9-8, 7-1). This pair has now won twelve straight matches, bringing their record to 12-2 for the fall season. Competition picks up again on Monday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium and runs through Tuesday, Oct. 30. Winners of the Regional Championship, will move on to national competition.
