Wayland and Roth Tabbed Valley Players of the Week

Leading the Illinois State soccer team to two conference wins over the weekend, junior Annie Wayland and senior Angie Roth have been named Missouri Valley Conference Players of the Week. Wayland, a junior hailing from St. Peters, Mo., was the top offensive player in the league scoring three goals in two wins for the Redbirds. Friday night Wayland scored unassisted at the 10:26 mark against Drury. Sunday afternoon against Southwest Missouri State, she picked up a feed from Dana Schulte 10 minutes into the first half for her seventh goal of the season. Wayland added another goal on a penalty kick with four minutes remaining in the game for her league-leading eighth goal of the year. Roth earned Valley Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring a Redbird defense that allowed just one goal all weekend and secured first place in the Valley standings. The senior from St. Louis, Mo., and her teammates held both Drury and SMS to five shots apiece in the two conference victories. This season, Roth has been a stalwart in a Redbird defense that leads the Valley with the fewest goals allowed, goals-against average and shutouts. A full weekend of soccer will take place at Adelaide Street Field this weekend. Friday afternoon the Birds (7-3, 3-0) play host to Valley rival Creighton at 4 p.m. and entertain Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
