Juniors Annie Wayland and Chrystal Johnston of the Illinois State soccer team have been named to the 2001 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes Regional second team.
Wayland, a native of St. Peters, Mo., was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year after leading the Redbirds to their third regular-season conference championship in the last four years. During the 2001 campaign, Wayland tallied 16 goals and two assists en route to breaking the Valleys career goals record and tying the record for career points. A three-time All-Valley first team pick, Wayland has led the league in scoring for the past three seasons.
Annie has made her mark in terms of scoring goals in the region, head coach Pete Kowall said. I think its very important that she got some recognition. Certainly this is an honor that comes with merit.
Johnston is a two-time, All-MVC first team selection and a member of the 2000 NSCAA Great Lakes Region second team. In 2001, Johnston, a speedy midfielder from Milton, Ontario, provided four assists for the 13-5 Redbirds.
Chrystal is somebody who has the ability to take over a game and do great things, Kowall said. Obviously she has combined with Annie many times over the three years they have played together. Its an honor for our team to have people on these lists because there are people from Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Michigan and Ohio State that have done well in the national tournament. There are very good players on this list.
