Redbirds Continue Season on the Road

After winning two titles at last weekends Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships, the Illinois State mens tennis team will be on the road again this weekend with matches against Wisconsin-Green Bay and Marquette on Saturday. The doubles duos of Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si took the No. 1 crown as Jason Smit and Brent Steven claimed the No. 2 title. Everyone felt good about the way they played last weekend, head coach Greg Kennett said. Our one and two doubles team played with good intensity. Last season the Birds defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-1, and fell to Marquette, 4-3. Everyone wants to play well this weekend and I think we will, Kennett added. No one has really stepped up and played well at No. 6, and were waiting for someone to step up and fill that in. The top two doubles spots are locked with Heath and Si at No.1 and Smit and Steven at No. 2. Kennett speculates Albert Piasecki will team with either Andy Martin, Pedro Coutinho or Thommas de Liefde at No. 3. Heath, Smit and Si will play in the top three singles spots, followed by Steven at No. 4 and Piasecki at No.5. Martin, Coutinho or de Liefde will fill the No. 6 spot. The match against Wisconsin-Green Bay begins at 9 a.m. while the Marquette match starts at 3 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
