'Birds Beat Billikens

Rebounding from a Friday loss, the Illinois State women's tennis team beat Saint Louis, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Evergreen Racquet Club. Sweeping the doubles matches, the 'Birds were up 1-0 heading into singles play. The No. 1 doubles team of Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva cruised to an 8-2 victory over Vicki Zielinski and Kristie Locke. At No. 2, Alana Hoffman and Zana Friganovic defeated Rajasree Kuruvilla and Ingrid Habony, 8-3, while Brigette Zarazee and Elizabeth Bingier won their match at No. 3, 9-7, over Julie Siemers and Erin Kersten. Suurvarik moved her record to 15-5 with at 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Kuruvilla. Suurvarik's doubles partner, Mikalayeva, defeated Siemers at No. 2, 7-6 (7), 6-3. Seniors Friganovic and Zarazee also added wins to their records. Friganovic won by default at No. 3 while Zarazee went the distance against Locke at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3. "We needed to get the win and rebound from our loss," head coach Chris Hoover said. "It was nice to win all the doubles, but we need more support and consistent play at four, five and six. Hopefully we can use this win and build on it." Next weekend, the 'Birds (4-4) host Toledo at 1 p.m. Friday and Northern Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Racquet Club.
