The Illinois State mens tennis team defeated Western Michigan in its second home meet of the season on Sunday with two doubles wins and three singles wins.
At first singles, Ricky Heath overtook Western Michigans Fernando Garcia after a match filled with long plays, 6-4, 7-6 while Jason Smit flew past Steve Pillon with an amazing second set, 7-6, 6-0. At third singles, Yew Ming Si conquered Ryan Tomilson 6-3, 7-5. Albert Piasecki, Thommas de Liefde and Andy Martin fought a hard fight with Piasecki going to three sets at the fourth, fifth and sixth spot.
No. 1 doubles Heath and Si battled Western Michigans Pillon and Tomilson to a 8-6 victory. The duo of Smit and Martin put up a fight against Maarschalk and Pathanjali but fell to Western Michigan, 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. Piasecki and de Liefde continued their winning streak and took down Western Michigans Kai Blache and Garcia, 8-4 at third doubles.
The Redbirds continue their winning season February 23 and 24 with matches against the University of Iowa and the University of Toledo in Iowa City. Play begins at 1 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
