NORMAL,Ill.-- The Illinois State mens tennis team brought down Northern Illinois in its first home meet of the season with five singles wins and three doubles wins.
First doubles Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si didnt have much trouble against Northerns Raymond van Wasbeek and Aaron Forsberg, 8-5. Second doubles Jason Smit and Andy Martin fought relentlessly and took down Brent Sitarski and Juan Pablo Barriga, 8-4, while the duo of Albert Piasecki and Thommas de Liefde dropped Northerns Jon Perlman and Tim Freesen, 8-3 at the No. 3 spot.
At first singles, Heath swept van Wasbeek, 6-3, 6-1 while Smit blew away Barriga at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 3 spot, Si found his groove and defeated Brent Sitarski, 6-3, 6-4 with de Liefde flying past Perlman , 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Martin battled against Northerns Freesen and won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
Tomorrow we are playing a highly respected team, said head coach Greg Kennett. Western Michigan is a big challenge but we expect to do well.
Illinois State will continue its season Sunday, February 18 at 11 a.m. at home against the University of Western Michigan.
